Mother's Day

When is Mother's Day 2027 in Ireland?

Sunday 7 March 2027, the earliest Irish Mother's Day of the decade. The Lent working behind it, the order-by dates, and why Saturday is the delivery day.

Checked on

Mother's Day in Ireland falls on Sunday 7 March 2027. That is the earliest it lands in the whole of the 2020s, a full week ahead of 2026 and nearly three weeks ahead of 2028, which is enough of a jump to catch out anyone going by memory.

The working, for 2027

The Irish date is the fourth Sunday of Lent. Everything follows from Easter.

  1. Easter Sunday 2027 is 28 March. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, which is why it moves at all.
  2. Ash Wednesday is 10 February 2027, forty-six days before Easter, and Lent begins there.
  3. The Sundays of Lent then run 14 February, 21 February, 28 February and 7 March.
  4. The fourth of those is 7 March, which is Mothering Sunday.

The shortcut is easier than the sequence: Easter Sunday minus twenty-one days. 28 March minus three weeks is 7 March. It works every year, in both Ireland and the UK.

One piece of 2027 trivia that is actually useful: the first Sunday of Lent that year is 14 February, so Valentine's Day and the start of Lent are the same day. If you are the kind of person who buys flowers twice in a season, the two occasions are three weeks apart in 2027 rather than the usual four or five.

Ireland, the UK and the US in 2027

United KingdomSunday 7 MarchFourth Sunday of Lent, identical rule
United StatesSunday 9 MaySecond Sunday in May, fixed

Ireland and the UK have never differed on this and cannot, because it is the same church calculation in both places. The American date is a separate holiday that shares a name, set in May by proclamation in 1914 and unmoved since.

The practical consequence in 2027 is a nine-week gap. If you are buying from a large international site in February and it offers you May, the site is applying the American rule to an Irish address. Check that the delivery country selector is set to Ireland before you assume anything is broken.

The ordering calendar

Working back from Saturday 6 March 2027, which is the delivery day that matters:

  • Saturday 20 February. Letterbox flowers ordered by now arrive with room to spare. They travel in bud and want a couple of days in water, so aim them at the Friday or Saturday, never at the Sunday itself.
  • Wednesday 24 February. Ten days out. Florist arrangements are still available as photographed and the delivery windows are still open. This is the date to act on if you want the order to be uneventful.
  • Wednesday 3 March. Guaranteed morning and afternoon windows start to disappear from Saturday. Standard all-day delivery is still fine.
  • Thursday 4 March. The last comfortable day for a nationwide order outside the Dublin commuter belt.
  • Friday 5 March. Next-day delivery for Saturday is still live at several services, but the choice of what to send has narrowed considerably.
  • Saturday 6 March. Same-day territory, and only in the areas each service actually covers on a Saturday.

What the same-day cutoffs mean that weekend

Two things change on a Mother's Day weekend, and neither is announced.

The published same-day cutoff is the time the order has to be placed, not the time it will arrive. On a normal Tuesday the gap between those is comfortable. On Saturday 6 March 2027, with every florist in the country working through a backlog, an order placed near the cutoff is a late-afternoon or evening delivery. Assume the last hour before a cutoff is a delivery after tea.

Cutoffs also vary by county far more than people expect. Among the services we track, Dublin same-day runs latest, the counties immediately around Dublin cut off around lunchtime, and the rest of the country is either an earlier deadline or not offered at all on a Saturday. The Where to order module below carries each service's own published times, dated, rather than a figure typed into this sentence.

If you are sending to Kerry, Donegal or Mayo, treat Friday 5 March as your same-day.

What is actually in season on 7 March

An early Mother's Day is a daffodil Mother's Day. In the first week of March, Irish-grown narcissi and tulips are at their best and are among the very few flowers on the market that did not fly in. Ranunculus, anemones and hyacinths are all good in early March too.

What you will not get in 2027 is peonies, garden roses or anything summery, and a bouquet built around imported peonies in early March costs a great deal for something that will have travelled a long way. The in-season page sets out the month by month picture.

A pot of hyacinths or a small potted spring bulb arrangement is also worth considering for an early date like this one. It costs less than a delivered bouquet, it lasts weeks rather than days, and in March it is doing what the season is doing anyway.

If 7 March catches you out

It will catch a lot of people out, being that early. If you miss it, do not send apologetic flowers on the Monday. Ring on the Sunday, then send something the following weekend and say plainly that you got the date wrong. Everyone in Ireland has done it at least once, usually because they were going by last year.

The following year moves the other way: Mother's Day 2028 is nineteen days later, on 26 March.

Questions people ask

What date is Mother's Day 2027 in Ireland?
Sunday 7 March 2027. It is the fourth Sunday of Lent, which falls three weeks before Easter Sunday, and Easter 2027 is 28 March. The same date applies in the UK.
Why is Mother's Day 2027 so early?
Because Easter 2027 is early. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox, and in 2027 that lands on 28 March, near the early end of its range. Three weeks back from an early Easter gives 7 March, the earliest Irish Mother's Day of the 2020s.
When is Mother's Day 2027 in America?
Sunday 9 May 2027, more than two months after the Irish date. American Mother's Day is fixed to the second Sunday in May and has no connection to Lent, so a US site shown to an Irish shopper in February will be quoting May delivery.
When should I order flowers for Mother's Day 2027?
By Wednesday 24 February for a florist bouquet with the delivery window you actually want, and by Saturday 20 February if you are sending letterbox flowers, which need a day or two out of the box to open. After roughly 3 March you are choosing from what is left rather than what you wanted.
Can flowers be delivered on Sunday 7 March 2027 in Ireland?
By some services, at a price. Most Irish flower services run Monday to Saturday, so Saturday 6 March is the reliable delivery day. One relay network publishes a paid Sunday delivery option nationwide and one online florist delivers on Sundays in Dublin. Both fill up, and both cost more than a Saturday slot.
